I love dogs and have a soft spot for people who love and take good care of them. As a matter of fact, I can’t recall ever questioning even for a bit about the reasons behind typical human-canine relationship.

Of course: dogs possess many admirable qualities, from aesthetics (cuteness) to intelligence (smartness); and from utilitarianism (usefulness) to emotive appeals (faithfulness, gratitude), etc. Dogs may well exist to remind humanity no matter how rough life is, or how crooked we are, we are still most deserving of love. If life’s a stage, they want to tell us we are the stars. Dogs, in short, are easy to love.

I love cats, too, albeit for different reasons. They are little narcissists that seem capable of neither loving nor showing the palest signs of gratitude. When we get home weary from work or school, they will put on their felid display to impose on us who must receive the most attention. Cats seem a constant reminder that, despite what we’d like to regard ourselves, we’re just beings of lesser importance. No sooner do we turn this world into a stage than they are the starlets. Aren’t these ingrates amazing? Yet, I’ve been more amazed by people who pet them instead of other animals. Cat people are amazing because cats, so to speak, are next-to-impossible to love.  Now, although this assessment may not be accurate, it can at least give us an inkling into the psychology of the people who pet them.

Above all, it is people I love the most. Humans are the most wonderful of beings and I suspect any attempt to justify it is a redundancy. Still, I feel obliged to write this: I love humanity because they are capable of doing good, bad and evil. Human beings are most amazing enigmas because they are are capable of not only changing views but also of conception on what’s good, bad or evil. We can say that, if there is such thing called ‘good, bad and evil’ (or even ‘just’!), it is within the human beings themselves that the eventual measure lies. The measure resides within us. If you are like me, we love other people despite our individual succumbing to volition and fallibility. We love others because we realise we are blessed and cursed with faculty to exercise our own opposite qualities every waking moment that colours our characters and shapes our every day. We are the ones who turn this world into a stage, write the script and direct ourselves to stardom, or doom.
